Two Amazon Go stores in the works in Pierce County. Here’s what we know
Two new Amazon Go stores are in the works in Pierce County, with one already advertised online by the e-retail giant.
Amazon is promoting its new store at 17710 Canyon Road E. in Frederickson Place. The center was built in 2022. The property was purchased in 2021 for $1.47 million by an LLC affiliated with Seth Startup of Columbia Retail Group of Bellevue.
Amazon told The News Tribune on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in response to questions, “We’re excited to confirm an Amazon Go store is coming to 17710 Canyon Road E. in Frederickson.”
It added, “This store will feature an expanded selection of grab-and-go food and beverage items, including a broader range of beer and wine, our Made-to-Order kitchen, a selection of specialty tapped beverages, and self-serve Pinkberry (frozen yogurt).”
The store is approximately 2,500 square feet. The company did not report an opening date other than “coming soon.”
Amazon also did not offer details of a second store listed in Pierce County permits as under development. That site, 15518 Meridian E. in South Hill, is being developed by an LLC affiliated with LRG Investors of Walnut Creek, California.
The investment group purchased the site for $2.49 million in 2021, with construction of the building in 2022.
Recent plans filed and processed in January for “Amazon Go, Puyallup South, Building A” call for building/installation of a walk-in cooler and freezer, a deli island refrigeration case and other refrigeration work.
Representatives for LRG and Columbia Retail Group did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the two separate sites.
News of site development for the stores was first reported in mid-December by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
Amazon Go stores are notable for the grab-and-go retail model where purchases are logged by a customer’s Amazon app on their smartphone, eliminating the need for a cashier-based checkout.
An Android or iPhone is required for the purchases.
“When you arrive, open the app, tap ‘In-Store Code,’ and scan in with the QR code presented. Just browse and shop like you would at any other store. Once you’re done shopping, you’re on your way. No lines, no checkout,” Amazon explains on its website.
CNBC reported Feb. 2 that Amazon was closing some of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery sites this year in a cost-reduction move, based on details from the company’s latest earnings call. The company also is pausing expansion of its Fresh stores.
