New ‘eclectic and eccentric’ Tacoma shop offers piercings, jewelry for every budget

A vacant brick building on the corner of Pacific Avenue and South 34th Street has a new chance at life. After a soft opening Saturday, Obsidian Body Piercing aims to fill a void in Tacoma by offering a variety of quality jewelry and piercing options for any budget.

Among the piercing options are ears, nose, facial and mouth piercings, as well as nipple and some genital piercings, said co-owner Zac Davenport. They will pierce anyone above the age of 5, he said.

Jewelry prices range from $20 to $500, with something for every budget, Davenport said. A basic nose piercing with a titanium stud costs $80.

Davenport said he and his wife BreAnne, also a co-owner, wanted to preserve the history of the building, keeping the exposed brick interior but adding their own flair – what he describes as a blend of “eclectic and eccentric” with animalistic, antique and Victorian influences.

Those details are evident. In the waiting area several glass decanters and black candlesticks, along with an orange bust of Pennywise the clown, sit atop a solid pine mantle Davenport said they bought from an old Victorian house.

In glass cases around the shop are a variety of earrings, septum rings and gauges made of obsidian, wood, shell, turquoise, Swarovski crystals and glittering green beetles.

Having grown up in Tacoma, Davenport said the city is up-and-coming and its changing demographics means they wanted to offer a broad selection of jewelry and products.

Davenport has been a piercer for nine years, and said he wants people to know that customer service is the shop’s number one priority.

“I’m not happy if you’re not happy,” he said. “I want you to leave here feeling good. When I hand people the mirror after they get a nostril piercing, we’ll say, and you see the smile on their face – like, that makes me happy ... Just something as simple as that can totally change somebody’s perspective on themselves, change their day, change their outlook.”

The shop is now accepting appointments and walk-ins. You can contact booking@obsidianbodypiercing.com to learn more or visit the shop in person to browse their jewelry collection.
