A new Starbucks is coming to Tacoma not far from where it just closed its mall store
Hang on, Starbucks fans. A new Tacoma Mall-area store is still opening but not as soon as advertised.
The mall store, which closed Jan. 14 according to a sign posted at the site, is being replaced with a new Starbucks at the former Adriatic Grill site near the mall, 4201 S. Steele St. The new store is now set to open Jan. 25, according to a company representative.
“It was due to open (Jan. 18) but was delayed due to weather,” Sam Jefferies, Starbucks media representative, told The News Tribune in response to questions Wednesday.
“A grand opening event is planned from 9 to 11 a.m.,” he added.
Jefferies noted that the workers at the now-closed mall store “were offered the opportunity to transfer, and the new store does include a drive thru.”
Starbucks did not share specific reasons behind the decision to move, other than the company is “always evaluating” its spaces and needs of its customers, according to Jefferies.
The News Tribune in April 2023 reported on permit activity tying Starbucks to the site after a permit was issued in early March to “install new ground mounted signage for Starbucks,” according to city records.
Starbucks at that time told The News Tribune it had no new store plans to announce.
The address also has been announced as a future site of Super Chix, a chicken franchise that opened its first location in the state last August at the Frederickson Place shopping center, 17710 Canyon Road E., Suite 100.
Permit activity through the fall shows that both businesses have been issued permits at various times at the site in 2023, with Super Chix’s building permit application filed Oct. 5 shown awaiting resubmittal/revisions.
Super Chix franchise representatives did not respond to request for comment.
