Longtime Olympia retailer for runners announces it is selling Olympia, Puyallup stores
A local retailer geared toward runners is selling its stores to a similar regional merchant.
South Sound Running, which launched its first store in Olympia in 1998, is selling its Olympia and Puyallup stores to Fleet Feet Puget Sound.
South Sound Running opened its Puyallup store in 2013. A third location at Point Ruston closed in 2022.
The retailers made the announcement Monday in a news release, which stated the sale was the result of the retirement of South Sound Running’s owners, Greg Klein and his wife, Joan Marchioro.
“We have always believed that we had the best customers in the world, and our success is due to their loyalty,” Klein said in the release, where he also acknowledged the dedication of his employees.
The stores, beyond their sportswear, are known for marathon training programs, organized runs and other community events and charity work.
Fleet Feet Puget Sound, led by owner Wade Pannell, will open in the Olympia and Puyallup locations in January, according to the release.
“We are honored to carry on the exceptional work of South Sound Running in these communities,” Pannell said in a statement. “With stores in Tacoma and Bonney Lake, we have the local knowledge and experience to build upon their legacy, provide outstanding service and foster a welcoming space for runners and walkers of all levels.”
