A new extended stay hotel is in the works in Tacoma near state Route 16 as the latest project for a chain that’s recently been expanding in Washington state.

Developers first filed a pre-application in May 2023 for a WoodSpring Suites. The property, behind the Tacoma Central shopping center, is just off South 23rd Street and runs alongside South Cedar Street.

A recent land-use decision from the City of Tacoma issued a preliminary mitigated determination of nonsignificance for the project, with a comment period ending Dec. 19.

Plans call for a four-story, 122-room extended stay hotel with a parking lot of 113 stalls.

The property is owned by New Community Church of Tacoma, which purchased the more than 4-acre site in December 2016 for $3.1 million.

An online listing shows a portion of the church’s parcel has been on the market with an asking price of just over $2 million. The listing notes the “allowed uses” include retail, office, medical, multi-family, hotel and senior housing.

The new hotel would be a redevelopment of the south half of the parcel, which is now a parking lot, and would not affect the church, which would remain.

The site includes an access point to the Scott Pierson Trail and faces changes required as part of the redevelopment, according to the MDNS.

The city’s MDNS states, “Based on the findings of the traffic impact analysis, a public access easement will be required at the existing paved entrance to the Scott Pierson Trail at the southwest corner of the project site that connects to a future trail connection.” The location is along two neighboring parcels.

It adds, “The easement area would need to accommodate construction of a 12-foot trail with recovery area, which is approximately 20 feet by 20 feet by 15 feet. This will provide a future connection between the Scott Pierson Trail and South 23rd Street easement to be approved per City Engineer approval.”

A map was included showing the approximate easement location in red:

To mitigate traffic impacts, the MDNS requires “a shared access easement for a consolidated driveway to South Cedar Street.”

If plans come through, it would be the third such hotel for the chain in the South Sound.

WoodSpring Suites Lakewood-Tacoma was developed in 2020, while WoodSpring Suites Olympia-Lacey opened earlier this year.

There is also a WoodSpring Suites Seattle-Tukwila, according to the hotel’s online directory, as well as one serving Seattle-Everett, Seattle-Redmond and Tri Cities-Richland, as well as two sites in the Portland-Vancouver area.

Representatives for Park Silver Development (project developer) and New Community Church did not respond to requests for comment.
