A major national retailer is saying goodbye to at least one mall in Pierce County.

Macy’s on Thursday announced that it would be closing 66 “non-go-forward” stores in the United States, including its store at the South Hill Mall in Puyallup.

Other Washington locations include its Kitsap Mall store and its Redmond furniture store.

The retailer announced in February 2024 it would be shrinking its national retail footprint by shedding under-performing stores as it worked to boost sales growth.

The total set for closure, the retailer noted, is 150 stores over a three-year period, while retaining 350 other sites.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., in Thursday’s announcement.

A media representative for the mall did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening. The mall lost Sears in October 2018, dividing that space for three other tenants.

For Macy’s stores, clearance sales will begin in January and will run for approximately 8-12 weeks, the company said. For Macy’s Backstage stores and Macy’s Furniture Galleries, clearance sales will begin in February and will run for approximately six weeks.

Meanwhile, another major anchor for the mall, JCPenney, is entering into a joint retail venture called Catalyst Brands with Sparc Group, Retail Dive reported Thursday. Investors include Simon Property Group, Brookfield Corporation, Authentic Brands Group and Shein.

Joe Bell, media representative for South Hill Mall, told The News Tribune on Friday afternoon that no solid replacement has been found yet, but they are actively seeking potential tenants for the large space.

“We have a pretty good track record when it comes to taking larger spaces like that and turning it into something else,” he added.

Editor’s note: Store updated Friday afternoon with additional detail.
