Siding-vinyl windows company closing Pierce County site, state reports. Layoffs total 150

A national external building-products firm is closing its Pierce County windows production/warehouse facility, affecting more than 100 workers.

A state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification this week announced that Associated Materials was closing the Fife location, which includes an Alpine Window Co. plant, with Jan. 13 as the listed start of layoffs.

The notice said 150 workers would be affected.

The Ohio-based company did not immediately respond Tuesday to requests for comment.

Associated Materials describes itself as a “market leader in vinyl windows, vinyl cladding, and metal siding and trim.”

The company started in 1947 with its Alside brand and owns brands including Gentek, Alpine, and Preservation, and sells other models and brands as well.

In 2022, SVPGlobal, a Connecticut-based global investment firm, acquired the company for an undisclosed sum.

Last year, Associated Materials announced layoffs affecting more than 130 workers in Ohio. At that time the company stated that those cuts were part of a long-term plan that included “concentrating windows production in the U.S. to locations strategically aligned to growth opportunities in the market and where (the company) can continue to service existing customers.”

Shortly after that announcement, the company said it would be investing $100 million in its manufacturing operations and future growth.

Part of that included moving the Fife window manufacturing to its factory in Yuma, Arizona, The Puget Sound Business Journal reported Tuesday, with the transition to be completed by the end of the first quarter of this year.

The company has more than 4,400 employees nationwide at sites in seven states and operates Alside and Gentek supply centers in the United States and Canada along with 11 manufacturing facilities.
