Bad news if you fill up your car at the South End Fred Meyer fuel station
The South End Fred Meyer that closed last week is now working toward dismantling its longtime onsite fuel station.
A permit application was filed with the city on Sept. 23, calling for demolition work at the site, 7250 Pacific Ave.
“We are removing the underground storage tanks and associated piping, canopy and pay kiosk,” the filing stated. “We will be paving in the removed concrete with asphalt.”
It added, “No landscaping affected.”
The work is estimated to cost $25,000, according to the application information on the city’s permit portal, with work anticipated to begin early next month, though start dates routinely change.
Fred Meyer confirmed plans for the Tacoma store closure in July, and the site officially closed to the public midday Sept. 17.
The store had been in operation since the early 1970s. The end of the store brought the loss to nearby residents of onsite banking services, a pharmacy and now the fueling station — all issues brought up at a neighborhood town hall about the Fred Meyer closure in August.
The South End Neighborhood Community Council has applied for a community grant seeking $250,000 from Kroger to be used for “interim food support,” Andrea Haug, chairperson for SENCO, told The News Tribune on Sept. 17.
Haug, in an update Thursday, told The News Tribune via text in response to questions that the group has sought to receive a decision from Kroger by Oct. 22.
Maria Lee, city of Tacoma media representative, told The News Tribune last week that the city had remained in contact with Kroger representatives “to explore options to activate the site and help fulfill community needs with regard to food and pharmacy access.”
