Portland-based Voodoo Doughnut is coming to familiar Tacoma retail and business corridor.

The News Tribune confirmed late Friday with a source speaking on background that the popular doughnut chain would be opening later this year at 2702 Sixth Ave. in Tacoma.

A “late summer, early fall opening,” is anticipated, according to the source.

Voodoo Doughnut did not respond Friday to emails sent by The News Tribune to its legal team and through its media-request form.

The Puget Sound Business Journal first reported the Sixth Avenue location for the business.

The business, launched by Portlanders Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon in the early 2000s, is known for its specialty doughnuts with all manner of toppings, such as bacon or cereal, served in iconic pink boxes.

The business so far has kept its Tacoma plans closely guarded, using the name “Doughnut Oasis” for the project in permit filings.

The location is the former site for Emerald Leaves cannabis shop (now at 2609 Sixth Ave.) and close to Legendary Doughnuts, 2602 Sixth Ave.

Permits for “Doughnut Oasis” at the 2702 Sixth Ave. location were first filed in May 2025. Building plans submitted in August make a reference to “Voodoo” in a supply checklist in the plans, but with no further details.

An attempt to reach the doughnut business’s representative listed on file in the application — who also lists Voodoo Doughnut as an employer on his LinkedIn page — was unsuccessful.

The owner of the Sixth Avenue building, NWIW1, LLC, purchased the Tacoma site in March 2025 for $1.25 million, county records show.

City of Tacoma media representative Maria Lee told The News Tribune in response to questions via email, “The building permit was approved on March 13, 2026 and the applicant has 180 days to pay the permit fees and have it issued, at which point they can start the work covered under the building permit.”

She added, “There will be other related permits that will still be needed, including plumbing, mechanical, and signage permits, which will have separate review times.”

Voodoo Doughnut has two Washington state locations — in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and Bellevue, among its more than 20 U.S. locations.
