New coffee drive-thru opening in Tacoma with espresso, energy drinks, sandwiches

A new coffee drive-thru has made its way to North Tacoma.

The Coffee Spot, 2518 N. Stevens St., will serve a variety of coffee and energy drinks, plus breakfast and lunch fare. The soft opening is set for June 1.

Co-owner Kelli Barbare said the opportunity to open the stand fell into her lap about a year ago, and she jumped at the chance, without having any experience in the coffee business.

Barbare and her business partner, Shanese Courtney, crafted the menu based on what they liked to get from local coffee stands and added their own twist.

The White Ruston Raspberry Mocha comes with espresso, whole milk, raspberry drizzle, white chocolate sauce, red raspberry flavoring, whipped cream and raspberry powder, while the s’mores-inspired Titlow Bonfire comes with espresso, whole milk, dark chocolate sauce, marshmallow fluff, marshmallow flavoring, cocoa powder and mini marshmallows.

There’s also your classic Americanos and lattes, along with energy drinks and twisted sodas.

Breakfast sandwiches include egg and cheese on sturdy rolls, with options like brown sugar bacon, turkey, sausage or plant-based protein. Other bites include bagels, muffins, cake pops and cookies.

For lunch, sandwiches include ham and brie, turkey, pesto and havarti, cubans and croissant pb&js.

The Coffee Spot will be open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

Up until now, the only other similar coffee stands in the area were Coffeezaun Espresso on North 46th Street or Cafe Elite in the West End.

Barbare said the North Stevens Street location works perfectly for her, since her daughter attends Mason Middle School down the street. In fact, Barbare said she’s planning to collaborate with the middle school, challenging students to create a new drink special each year.

The Coffee Spot has plans to expand to the Lakewood area in the next year or so, but Barbare and Courtney are still hammering out the details.

After all the time and money put into the stand over the last year, Barbare and Courtney said they can’t wait to finally get things rolling.

“We really have put everything into this,” Courtney said. “It’s literally just been [our] savings completely, and we’re really proud of that.”
