A popular gym chain is closing one of its Tacoma locations permanently next month.

LA Fitness at 5915 6th Ave. will shutter July 20 at 2 p.m., according to the gym’s front desk. Fitness International LLC, the parent company of LA Fitness, confirmed the closure.

Luis Guzman, front desk representative at the Sixth Avenue location, said the corporate office told local staff about the closure this week and gave no further explanation.

Members of the Sixth Avenue location will be able to continue their memberships at other locations, Guzman said, including two in Tacoma, one in Federal Way and one in Puyallup. If members choose to cancel their membership instead, no extra fees will be charged.

LA Fitness members were informed of the closure this week. Signs were posted to the front door of the gym on Tuesday.

“Everybody is frustrated,” member Kazuko Wohlers told The News Tribune.

Since last August, LA Fitness has been in a legal battle with the Federal Trade Commission over its cancellation practices.

The FTC alleges that LA Fitness and other gyms have failed to provide a simple cancellation process, which violates the FTC Act. LA Fitness has disputed those claims.
