Here’s an update on Uwajimaya’s return to its hometown of Tacoma
If you’ve driven by the location of the former Tacoma Hobby Lobby and wondered what’s up with plans for Uwajimaya Asian Market to return to Tacoma, we’ve got you covered.
An application was filed May 29 for commercial alteration at the site, 3130 S. 23rd St. next to Tacoma Central shopping center just off state Route 16 and Union Avenue.
According to the city permit portal, the application’s status is “awaiting resubmittal/revisions.”
“Yes, we are still coming to Tacoma,” said Denise Moriguchi, president and CEO of the business, in an emailed response July 2 to The News Tribune seeking an update.
“Planning and permitting and then construction takes a while for grocery stores as the systems planning (like refrigeration) and equipment can take a while,” she added.
The News Tribune reported in January on Uwajimaya’s plans to return to Tacoma after nearly a century with a new store opening in 2027.
Despite a banner that’s been visible from state Route 16 indicating space still available at the property, Moriguchi said Uwajimaya could have initial plans and renderings ready to share in the coming weeks.
“I was just about to ask my team to make sure we install some ‘Coming Soon’ posters or window signage,” she added in her email.
Uwajimaya was founded in Tacoma in 1928 by Fujimatsu and Sadako Moriguchi, who operated the store until the 1940s. The Moriguchis were swept up in the internment of Japanese Americans after the U.S. entry into World War II. Following their release, they relocated to Seattle, home to the chain’s flagship.
The store also has locations in Bellevue, Renton and Beaverton, Oregon.
The fully stocked Asian grocery also features Asian-inspired kitchen and home goods as well as health and beauty products. Its existing stores offer catering, according to its website.
