Senior facility Franke Tobey Jones announces multi-year expansion

Senior living community Franke Tobey Jones announced a multi-year expansion Monday that will increase capacity and provide more services.

The 90-year-old Tacoma nonprofit will expand in three phases over the next five to eight years. Construction is expected to begin by spring 2017.

Located in the Point Defiance neighborhood, the community serves 190 residents ages 55 and older. When expansion is complete, resident capacity will rise to 280.

The expansion is in the planning stages and will include involvement from residents, families and surrounding neighbors.

Franke Tobey Jones residents are spread across different need levels, including independent living, assisted living, memory care services and skilled nursing. Programs include the Point Defiance-Ruston Senior Center, the Senior University program and the M.J. Wicks Family Wellness Center. Programs are open to residents and nonresidents.

Phase I of the expansion will include a health center, a new independent living apartment building and expanded memory care services.

Phase II will build an “Aging in Place” independent living apartment building that will include a wellness center, auditorium, bistro, game room, lounge, business/computer room, library and rooftop deck.

Phase III is a renovation of the historic original building and an existing apartment building.

Green spaces will be preserved, the announcement stated.

A capital campaign is planned to offset some of the project expenses and community meetings will be held to gather input on expansion.
