At home, at work, at leisure: Here’s how we spend our time

You work, you play, and if you’re over 75, you spend a lot of time reading. The further you progressed in school, the more likely you are to work at home.

Such are some of the results inside the 2015 American Time Use Survey as compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and released Friday.

Among the data:

▪ On days they worked, employed persons spent an average of 7.6 hours on the job. That’s an average of 8 hours on weekdays and 5.6 hours on weekends.

▪ Employed men worked 42 minutes per week more than employed women.

▪ 82 percent of employed persons did some or all of their work at their workplace, and 24 percent did some or all of their work at home.

▪ The share of workers working at home grew from 19 percent in 2003 to 24 percent in 2015.

▪ Compared with workers with less education, employed persons with a bachelor’s degree or higher were most likely (39 percent) to do some or all of their work from home.

▪ 7 percent of workers with less than a high school diploma worked from home.

▪ Workers in management, business, financial operations and professional positions were most likely to work from home.

▪ On an average day, 85 percent of women and 67 percent of men spent some time doing housework, cooking, lawn care or other household duties.

▪ On days they did household duties, women spent an average of 2.6 hours while men spent 2.1 hours.

▪ On an average day, 22 percent of men did housework such as cleaning or laundry, compared with 50 percent of women.

▪ On an average day, men spent 5.8 hours and women spent 5.1 hours in leisure activities including TV viewing, socializing and exercising.

▪ TV viewing occupied an average of 2.8 hours per day for all adults 15 and over.

▪ On an average day, adults 75 and older spent 7.8 hours engaging in leisure activities, more than any other group.

▪ Adults 75 and older averaged 1.1 hours of reading per weekend day and 20 minutes playing games or otherwise using a computer. Conversely, individuals 15 to 19 read for an average of eight minutes per weekend day and spent 1.3 hours at the keyboard.
