Movie ticket app allows Tacoma users to meet friends and pre-pay popcorn

Goodbye ticket lines. Hello pre-paid popcorn.

A new smart phone app coming to Tacoma on Wednesday allows users to invite friends, buy tickets and pre-order concessions at movie theaters.

To kick off the launch, California-based Atom Tickets is dispensing free movie tickets.

It’s part of a 40-market expansion — including Seattle — for the developer.

Like Fandango, users can check movie reviews and show times. But Atom allows friends to coordinate movie outings via Facebook or contact lists and pay for tickets separately, if desired.

Theatergoers can also pre-pay for concession items.

At the theater, consumers go directly to ushers and concession counters, where a QR code is scanned at tablet kiosks.

In Pierce County, participating theater chains include Regal Cinemas and AMC Theatres. To celebrate the launch, consumers will receive their first movie ticket free.

The Atom Tickets app is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
