Tacoma suspends on-street paid parking, ticketing downtown; City Hall to close Wednesday

People parking on the street in downtown Tacoma will no longer have to pay.

They also won’t be ticketed for violating time restrictions.

The city temporarily suspended pay station operations downtown starting this week, according to a press release. On-street parking will not require the purchase of a pay receipt.

The suspension will be in place until further notice.

Parking tickets still will be given for safety violations, such as parking in front of a fire hydrant or in a handicapped zone without a permit.

In additional changes, the City Municipal Building at 747 Market St., or City Hall, will close to the public starting Wednesday to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

The lobby at Tacoma Public Utilities at 3628 S. 35th St. also will close to the public starting Wednesday.

Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards said in a press conference Tuesday that essential public services will continue.

“We want you to know that we will be picking up your trash. When you dial 911, we will be answering your call and responding to those calls ...We are here to make this difficult time as easy as possible,” Woodards said.
