Pierce County COVID-19 cases go up by 19; total for county now 75

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department on Thursday reported 19 new cases of COVID-19.

The county’s total now stands at 75, up from Wednesday’s total of 56, with one death, also reported Wednesday.

There now have been 1,430 Pierce County residents tested for the virus, the department noted in its Thursday update.

Thursday case numbers and location with Wednesday’s totals in parentheses:

Bonney Lake: 1

East Pierce County: 1

Gig Harbor area: 7 (3)

Lakewood: 5 (3)

North East Pierce County: 2 (no change)

Puyallup: 15 (8)

South Pierce County: 6 (5)

Tacoma: 31 (27)

University Place: 7 (6)

On Wednesday the health department changed its reporting technique, switching from individual cases to listings by city/area in the county.

The health department said the reporting change was made to align with the state Department of Health’s reporting methods.

Different counties have offered different manners of reporting details, such as Snohomish County giving details about type of contact, or Clark County offering small narratives about each case, while others, such as Thurston County, have more limited details, only detailing the age group, date of diagnosis and gender of patient.

Statewide on Thursday, total cases were 1,376 up from 1,187, and 74 deaths, up from 66.
