Pierce County to everybody: Stop flushing things other than toilet paper

Pierce county sewer system has seen an increase in nonflushable items, the department said Friday.

“Only toilet paper and what comes from the human body should be flushed down the toilet,” spokesperson Sean McDermott said.

Even items that say “flushable” like hygiene and disinfecting wipes should not be tossed down a toilet. They can clog sewer pipes, cause backups and severely damage the sewer system, McDermott said.

Damage can be expensive for property owners, who are responsible for the section of sewer that runs from the house to public lines. Those with a septic tank are fully responsible for maintenance and repair.
