Pierce County closes all parks and trailheads as part of coronavirus response

Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department announced on Thursday that all parks, parking lots, golf courses, sports fields and picnic areas are closed.

While that list includes trail-head parking lots, it does not include the trails themselves.

“The idea is that people should get outside and walk near their home,” said Libby Catalinich, Pierce County director of communications.

Those who walk the trails are asked to practice social distancing of six feet.

The county’s public recreational facilities will be closed from March 25 to April 8. Tacoma’s Metro Parks also closed Five Mile Drive and Point Defiance Park, playgrounds, sports courts and skate parks.

Entrances to Mount Rainier National park also have been closed.
