Pierce County extends property-tax payment deadline amid coronavirus crisis

The Pierce County assessor-treasurer has extended property-tax due date to June 1 in response to the coronavirus outbreak, the county announced Monday.

Assessor-Treasurer Mike Lonergan said the decision was due to the financial impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on residents. Unpaid taxes from previous years are not included in the extension.

Originally due April 30, the extension is applicable to property owners who pay the tax themselves, rather than through a mortgage lender or service.

Banks and other financial institutions that pay residential and commercial property taxes on behalf of property owners must still meet the April 30 deadline, Lonergan said in a press release.

“At the same time, local governments are needed more than ever right now, and the property tax is a major funding source for many needed services,” Lonergan said. “Postponing the due date by a month is the best way to balance these needs.”

With business and restaurants closed, unemployment filings have skyrocketed. A total of 14,730 Pierce County residents filed for unemployment benefits last week, a surge from the previous week’s 1,559.
