Under Armour’s mask made for exercise sold out in an hour. When will they be back?

Under Armour created a face mask to make it easier to breathe during exercise — but it ended up selling out in less than an hour.

Sportsmask is water-resistant, reusable, and helps stop the spread of COVID-19 by reducing respiratory droplets in the air left by the wearer, according to the brand.

The mask debuted this week but sold out in less than an hour, Under Armour CEO Patrik Frisk tweeted on Thursday. Frisk said they will become available again in July.

The mask is made with three layers, adhering to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It also has PROTX2, which is supposed to prevent the growth of bacteria.

“As soon as we finalized the design of our face mask for PPE, we dove straight into the innovation process of optimizing a mask for performance,” Kyle Blakely, VP of Materials Innovation at Under Armour, said in a statement. “We knew our athletes would need us to come through quickly with a solve to aid their return to training, one that would put health and safety first and adhere to current CDC guidelines.”

Dr. Derek Chu, a clinical scholar of medicine at McMaster University, told TODAY that surgical masks or “cotton masks with 12 to 16 layers of fabric” are the most effective. Dr. John Torres, medical correspondent for NBC News, said “my guess is that (the Under Armour face mask) is as good, but probably not much better, than most triple-layer cloth masks.”

The World Health Organization, which previously didn’t tell people to wear face masks in public, said this week that masks should be worn “in light of evolving evidence,” according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO.

The CDC started recommending people wear face masks in public in early April.

Confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 2 million in the U.S. this week, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 114,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. as of June 12.
