Washington reports 488 new COVID-19 cases, 4 deaths Friday

The Washington State Department of Health on Friday reported 488 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and four deaths.

Pierce County reported 23 new cases and two new deaths Friday. Pierce County had a total of 87 deaths likely caused by COVID-19 as of Friday.

Statewide totals from the illness caused by the coronavirus are at 30,855 cases and 1,304 deaths, up from 30,367 cases and 1,300 deaths on Thursday.

Washington state has conducted 514,428 coronavirus tests, with 6 percent coming back positive. The test numbers reflect only polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, which are given to patients while the virus is presumably still active in the body.

Sixteen people with confirmed COVID-19 cases were admitted to Washington state hospitals on June 18, the most recent date with complete data. March 23 saw 89 admittances, the highest number to date during the pandemic.

The total number of people who have been hospitalized in Washington state with a confirmed case of COVID-19 stood at 4,194 on Friday.

On Friday, DOH said it had identified 88 additional hospitalizations statewide that had gone unreported due to a data feed interruption. Most of the hospitalizations had occurred in the prior week but date back to March 29.

DOH identified the most heavily impacted counties as Yakima (16), King (21), Benton (8), Pierce (9), Franklin (6), Snohomish (5) and Spokane (6).

There have been more than 2.4 million confirmed coronavirus cases and 124,978 deaths from the virus in the United States as of Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 492,000 people have died from the disease worldwide.

King County continues to have the highest numbers in Washington, with 9,672 cases and 607 deaths. Snohomish County has the second highest number of deaths at 167. Yakima County has the second highest number of cases at 6,759.

Washington’s least populous county, Garfield, remains the only one without a case. Six other counties are reporting fewer than 10 cases each.
