Three workers at Puyallup’s South Hill post office test positive for the coronavirus

Three employees at Puyallup’s South Hill post office have tested positive for COVID-19, the U.S. Postal Service confirmed Tuesday.

“They are going through the appropriate medical procedures,” spokesperson Ernie Swanson said in an email.

The employees tested positive on or about July 15, Swanson said. They have been isolated at home since and tentatively are scheduled to return to work Aug. 3, Swanson said.

The post office on Meridian East in Puyallup remains open.

Swanson said all postal service facilities are following public health procedures — employees wear face masks, maintain social distancing, wash hands and sanitize work areas.

As the virus spreads through respiratory droplets, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said there is a very low likelihood of spreading the virus through contact with the mail.

Between July 4 and July 10, there have been 13 COVID-19 outbreaks in Pierce County, according to the most recent data from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. The state target is two outbreaks a week.
