Pierce County hits single-day high for new COVID-19 cases and adds 5 new deaths
Pierce County on Thursday reported 123 new COVID-19 cases and five new deaths.
Thursday’s new case total is the county’s highest single-day total reported since the start of the pandemic and follows two days of lower totals, with Wednesday’s total of 56 the lowest reported since July 19.
County totals are now 5,397 cases and 123 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.
The county’s cumulative death toll was reduced by one after it was reassigned to a different county.
Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.
Thursday’s death toll included a University Place man in his 70s, a University Place woman in her 50s, a Tacoma man in his 90s, another Tacoma man in his 70s and a Parkland woman in her 90s, all with underlying health conditions.
The Tacoma Pierce-County Health Department has reported 1,303 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 144.5. The average cases per day over the last 14 days is 93.1.
There are an estimated 2,382 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.
