Pierce County reports 45 new COVID-19 cases, one new death
Pierce County on Thursday reported 45 new COVID-19 cases and one new death.
The new death involved a Tacoma man in his 60s with underlying health conditions.
County totals are now at 6,556 cases and 146 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 733 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 83.1. The goal for counties in Phase 2 is 25 or fewer per 100,000.
The average cases per day over the past 14 days is 52.4.
There are an estimated 1,784 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.
Cases involving younger people continued to lead in impacts countywide.
In an update Thursday morning, the health department noted that in the past two weeks, 39.9 percent of cases were in the 20-39 age group. That age group represents 27 percent of Pierce County population.
That was higher than cases involving those age 60 or older (18.9 percent) or healthcare workers (9.8 percent), according to the update.
Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.
Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
In updated information provided on the local health department’s COVID-19 dashboard, the county’s rate of positive COVID-19 tests for the week of Aug. 9-15 (the most recent dates available) was at 4.4 percent, down from a summer peak of 7.4 percent the week of July 19, with an average of 1,300 tests performed per day Aug. 9-15, down from 1,400 the week of July 19.
The health department cautions on its website that the testing data is incomplete “and will change weekly as we gain access to older data.”
