County starts week with 51 new COVID-19 cases, 1 new death, outbreak at care facility

Pierce County reported 51 new COVID-19 cases Monday and one additional death.

The latest death involved a man in his 80s from the Edgewood/Fife/Milton geographic region. He had underlying health conditions, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

County totals are now 7,476 cases and 164 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 498 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 55.2. The goal for counties in Phase 2 is 25 or fewer per 100,000.

Average cases per day over the past 14 days is 35.6.

There are an estimated 1,035 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.

On Monday, the health department announced 22 new confirmed cases from ManorCare Health Services in Tacoma, with a total of 28 overall tied to the facility.

“We continue to support long-term care facilities as they test residents to identify COVID-19 cases and limit the spread,” the department said in Monday’s report.

With cases hovering around 50 or more a day in recent days, the health department said, “It is too early to tell if this is because of Labor Day weekend gatherings or if it will continue into the coming weeks.”

It expected to have more information on the rise in cases by midweek.

Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.

Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
