Pierce County starts week with 49 new COVID-19 cases, 1 new death

Pierce County reported 49 new COVID-19 cases Monday and one new death.

The latest death involved a Tacoma woman in her 70s with underlying health conditions.

County totals are now at 7,821 cases and 171 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 623 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 69.1. The goal for counties in Phase 2 is 25 or fewer per 100,000.

With a six-day data lag required in the state’s Safe Start measurements, the county’s case rate per 100,000 is at 57.

Average cases per day over the past 14 days is 44.5.

There are an estimated 1,124 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.

According to the department on Monday, the 14-day average rate of cases “has increased 11 out of the past 12 days.”

“Possible reasons for this trend that began after Labor Day weekend include secondary transmissions as well as transmissions occurring among youth in settings such as child care, recreation, social gatherings and any place where people are gathering, not wearing masks and not maintaining physical distancing,” the department reported.

It also noted the 20-39 age group still comprise the highest number of COVID-19 cases at 40.9 percent of total cases in the past two weeks; those under 20 make up 14.8 percent of cases in the same timeframe.

Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.

Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
