Pierce County sees 52 new COVID-19 cases, 3 new deaths Tuesday
Pierce County reported 52 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and three new deaths.
The latest deaths included a Central Pierce County woman in her 70s and a University Place woman in her 90s, both with underlying health conditions. A Tacoma woman in her 90s also died; it is unknown whether she had underlying health conditions.
County totals are now at 7,870 cases and 174 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 646 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 71.6. The goal for counties in Phase 2 is 25 or fewer per 100,000.
With a six-day data lag required in the state’s Safe Start measurements, the county’s case rate per 100,000 is at 58.9.
Average cases per day over the past 14 days is 46.1.
There are an estimated 1,121 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.
According to the department on Tuesday, the 14-day average rate of cases “has increased 12 out of the past 13 days.”
“Possible reasons for this trend that began after Labor Day weekend include secondary transmissions as well as transmissions occurring among youth in settings such as child care, recreation, social gatherings and any place where people are gathering, not wearing masks and not maintaining physical distancing,” the department reported.
Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.
Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
