Pierce County sees 64 new COVID-19 cases, 2 new deaths Wednesday

Pierce County reported 64 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and two new deaths.

The new deaths involved a Tacoma man in his 50s and a Tacoma man in his 80s, both with underlying health conditions.

County totals are now at 7,933 cases and 176 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 675 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 74.8. The goal for counties in Phase 2 is 25 or fewer per 100,000.

With a six-day data lag required in the state’s Safe Start measurements, the county’s case rate per 100,000 is at 59.3.

Average cases per day over the past 14 days is 48.2.

There are an estimated 1,152 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.

According to the department on Wednesday, the 14-day average rate of cases “has increased 13 out of the past 14 days.”

Six outbreaks were reported the week of Sept. 19-25, up from four the previous week and three the week of Sept. 5. Outbreaks are defined as any site reporting two or more cases.

Additionally, the department reported an increase in the percent of positive tests: 4 percent compared with 2.5 percent the previous week.

“This number reflects an increase in the number of confirmed cases over the past week and a decrease in the number of people getting tested,” the department said Wednesday.

Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.

Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
