Pierce County closing in on 8,000 COVID-19 cases, Thursday report shows
Pierce County reported 45 new COVID-19 cases Thursday and no new deaths.
County totals are now at 7,974 cases and 176 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 689 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 76.4. The goal for counties in Phase 2 is 25 or fewer per 100,000.
With a six-day data lag required in the state’s Safe Start measurements, the county’s case rate per 100,000 is at 60.8.
Average cases per day over the past 14 days is 49.2.
There are an estimated 1,137 still-active cases in the county, according to the health department.
According to the department on Thursday, the 14-day average rate of cases “has increased 12 out of the past 14 days.”
Six outbreaks were reported the week of Sept. 19-25, up from four the previous week and three the week of Sept. 5. Outbreaks are defined as any site reporting two or more cases.
Additionally, the department reported an increase in the percent of positive tests: 4 percent compared with 2.5 percent the previous week.
“This number reflects an increase in the number of confirmed cases over the past week and a decrease in the number of people getting tested,” the department said Wednesday.
Daily totals for cases and deaths can change as the county receives new information, finds duplicate data or is assigned cases originally attributed to other counties.
Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
