Pierce County starts week with lower number of new COVID-19 cases; new outbreak listed
Pierce County reported 32 new COVID-19 cases Monday and one additional death.
The new death involved a Lakewood man in his 60s with underlying health conditions.
County totals are now 8,626 confirmed cases and 181 deaths since the first case in the coronavirus pandemic was recorded March 6.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has reported 813 cases in the past 14 days. The 14-day case rate per 100,000 people is 90.1.
Average cases per day over the past 14 days are 58.1.
With a six-day data lag required in the state’s Safe Start measurements, the county’s case rate per 100,000 is 78.6.
There are an estimated 1,419 still-active cases in the county.
The county topped 90 in new single-day case counts twice in recent days, the highest single-day totals since August. On Monday, the health department noted in its daily update that Sunday’s count of 98 “did not include any backlog in cases from state systems, as we originally reported. The high number is from increasing community transmission, more household transmissions, and multiple positive tests from one long-term care facility.”
That care facility, Maple Creek of Lakewood, was added Monday to the health department’s list of congregate care site outbreaks with 21 reported cases.
Testing is available at various sites in the county. For more information on testing sites, go to www.tpchd.org/covidtest.
