Pierce County continues to see high numbers of COVID-19 deaths; cases in triple digits
Pierce County reported 335 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and six new deaths.
The latest deaths included:
▪ A Tacoma woman in her 70s.
▪ A Lake Tapps/Sumner area man in his 40s.
▪ A man in his 50s from an unknown location in Pierce County.
▪ A Lake Tapps/Sumner area man in his 50s.
▪ A Frederickson man in his 80s.
▪ A Lakewood man in his 70s.
These follow seven deaths reported Tuesday and six on Monday.
The county’s totals are 76,501 cases and 739 deaths since the first confirmed coronavirus case was reported in March 2020.
Pierce County’s 14-day case rate per 100,000 was 640.4 for Aug. 24-Sept. 6. The rate of new hospitalizations per 100,000 is at 16.2
From February to August, 28,695 (85.1%) of Pierce County’s cases involved unvaccinated individuals, according to the state Department of Health in its latest vaccine data report issued Sept. 15.
That compares with 3,218 (9.5%) cases involving those vaccinated during the same period, according to state DOH.

VACCINES
In Pierce County, 63.3 percent of the population 12 and older has initiated vaccination, and 56.3 percent is fully vaccinated, according to state Department of Health.
Among those 12 and older statewide, 75.1 percent has initiated vaccination, and 68.1 percent is fully vaccinated.
Of the county’s total population, half is now fully vaccinated, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department in its Wednesday update.

Walk-up vaccine sites run by the county and most TPCHD events now no longer require an appointment, and all TPCHD events are for first or second doses. Anyone age 12 or older is eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. Those younger than 18 need parent or guardian approval.
