Pierce County reports 46 deaths from COVID in weekly totals but says surge is waning

Pierce County is on the downward slope of the omicron variant-fueled surge of COVID-19 cases, according to data released Tuesday.

“Still, our cases are among the highest we’ve ever seen,” the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department said. “And we’re reporting 46 deaths this week.”

As of Jan. 11, the county’s 14-day case rate was 3,494 per 100,000. That figure is 14.6 percent higher than the previous 2-week period of Dec. 26-Jan. 8.

The agency confirmed 6,736 cases of COVID-19 and 46 new deaths in Pierce County for Jan. 16-22.

Deaths included:

A man in his 40s from Tacoma.

A man in his 50s from East Pierce County.

A man in his 50s from Lakewood.

A woman in her 50s from South Hill.

A man in his 50s from South Hill.

A woman in her 50s from Tacoma.

A woman in her 60s from Parkland.

Two men in their 60s from Puyallup.

A woman in her 60s from University Place.

A man in his 60s from East Pierce County.

A woman in her 60s from Gig Harbor.

Two women in their 60s from Tacoma.

A man in his 60s from South Hill.

A man in his 70s from Tacoma.

A man in his 70s from the Key Peninsula.

Two women in their 70s from Sumner/Lake Tapps.

Two men in their 70s from Central Pierce County.

A man in his 70s from South Pierce County.

A man in his 70s from East Pierce County.

Two women in their 70s from Tacoma.

A man in his 70s from Spanaway.

Pierce County has had a total of 155,422 cases of COVID-19 and 1,062 deaths since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The 7-day hospitalization rate was 36.5 per 100,000 for the period ending Jan. 11. That figure is 7.6 percent lower than the previous period ending Jan. 8.

According to TPCHD data, 62 percent of county residents are vaccinated against the coronavirus.
