She started it as a Twitter hashtag and now it’s grown into the civil rights movement of its time.

Patrisse Cullors, along with Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza, started the hashtag #blacklives matter in response to the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

On May 3, Cullors, along with Slate Magazine chief political correspondent Jamelle Bouie, will speak in Tacoma about the frustrations that led to the social activist movement and where it’s gone since then.

The event is at Tacoma’s Pantages Theater. Tickets are $24. Students can get a 20 percent discount.
