Lakewood Sounder Station to add permit parking

Commuters can reserve parking spots before 8 a.m. at the Lakewood Sounder Station next year, Sound Transit announced.

The station’s parking garage frequently fills up before 7:30 a.m., Sound Transit Scott Thompson said.

“This makes it difficult to access transit for those who can’t arrive so early, including parents who must drop children off at school or day care, and other potential riders who don’t work a conventional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule,” he said in a Nov. 25 press release.

Starting in January, the parking permits will cost $45 monthly, but commuters eligible for ORCA Lift can receive a $15 discount, Thompson said. Those who carpool to the station can sign up for a free parking permit. Permits go on sale on Dec. 2.

The number of permitted parking spaces will vary based on demand but will not exceed 50 percent of the garage, Thompson said. Any unused permit space will be open to all after 8 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.

Permit applicants must use the Sounder at least 12 days per month and be residents of the Sound Transit District.

The Sound Transit board approved permit-parking for high-demand parking garages last year.
