Man fatally shot in University Place road rage incident
A man was fatally shot Wednesday evening during a road rage incident in University Place, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
Detectives were responding to the incident which occurred in the 10300 block of Chambers Creek Road West. The location is near the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the incident began when a Chevy Silverado truck was being driven recklessly downhill on Chambers Creek Road West, according to multiple witnesses.
The Silverado passed several vehicles on the two-lane road, Troyer said. Eventually, the truck stopped and the driver, a 48-year-old DuPont resident, exited the vehicle holding a handgun.
A Dodge Ram truck which was forced to stop directly behind the Silverado contained two men — a driver and his 42-year-old father-in-law, Troyer said. The father-in-law, a Steilacoom resident, also had a gun. He exited the Dodge.
“There was a verbal confrontation,” Troyer said. “The guy who got out of the (Silverado) was shot and died at the scene.”
An off-duty firefighter who was in another stopped vehicle attempted CPR on the shooting victim.
The two men in the Ram stayed at the scene.
As of 7 p.m., no arrests had been made. The Sheriff’s Department homicide team is on scene and the investigation will continue through the night, Troyer said.
Chambers Creek Road will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.
