People’s Park to reopen Thursday following clean up of homeless encampment

People’s Park in Hilltop will reopen Thursday, according to Metro Parks.

The park at 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way closed earlier this month for clean up of a homeless encampment. It’s been closed for three weeks.

Thursday morning, crews will remove the orange fencing around the park, said Metro Parks spokesperson Hunter George.

The planting strips on 10th Street and L Streets and a portion of the turf area inside the park will continue to be blocked off from use. The areas will receive additional renovations in the spring.

The rest of the park has been cleaned. The fibar material under the play equipment has been replaced, in addition to several inches of soil in the areas most affected.

“The neighborhood has been very patient throughout this process, and we look forward to seeing People’s Park active again,” George said in an email.
