Medical examiner releases cause of death in missing hiker found near Mount Rainier

An Orting man found dead near Mount Rainier National Park after not returning home from a camping trip killed himself, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Mark Miller, 60, did not come back from a weekend camping trip Jan. 26 so his family reported him missing.

Deputies found his vehicle parked near the Carbon River ranger station with his cell phone and identification inside.

Search and rescue teams scoured the area and found Miller dead Saturday evening.

Forensic investigators ruled his death a suicide and said Miller died of a gunshot wound.
