Some Pierce County schools release early due to heavy rains, flooding
Update: Orting School District will be closed Friday. White River School District will start two hours late on Friday.
Some school districts in Pierce County are releasing students early Thursday due to inclement weather.
Heavy rains blanketed Western Washington this week, causing flooding, landslides and road closures. Officials are warning the worst is yet to come.
Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib issued an emergency proclamation for 19 counties, including Pierce, Thurston and King.
The following Pierce County school districts have announced early release Thursday:
▪ Orting School District: No after school/evening activities. Dismissal times for each school are: 12:15 p.m. Orting High School; 12:25 p.m. Orting Middle School; 1:30 p.m. Ptarmigan Ridge Elementary, 1:20 Orting Primary School.
▪ White River School District: High school students dismissal at 11:30 a.m.; middle school students at 11:50 a.m., and elementary/Early Learning Center at 12:50 p.m. Inclement weather routes are in effect. No after school/evening activities.
▪ Carbonado School District: Students released at 10:15 a.m. on emergency bus routes.
No decisions have yet been made regarding whether the districts will remain closed Friday.
Tacoma, Puyallup and Bethel school districts have reported no major impacts.
