Tacoma schools will serve ‘drive-thru style’ meals for students affected by coronavirus closures

Students in Tacoma affected by school closures due to coronavirus concerns will still be able to get fed, Tacoma Public Schools announced Tuesday evening.

The district’s Nutrition Services Department will be providing free meals at the following locations starting Wednesday:

  • Lowell Elementary – 810 N. 13th St
  • Mary Lyon Elementary – 101 E. 46th St
  • Sheridan Elementary – 5317 E. McKinley Ave.

The district announced the three elementary schools and Wilson High School would experience closures this week due to presumed positive tests for COVID-19.

Meals will be served between 10 a.m. and noon to avoid large gatherings, the district said.

Each student will receive two meals: lunch and breakfast for the following morning.

Families are asked to enter through the bus loading zone.

“Our Nutrition Services staff will be set up to serve you drive-thru style,” the district said on its website. “Walk-ups are welcome. Please look for our onsite sandwich boards for additional directions.”

The process has been approved by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

The lunch to be provided includes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, sunflower seeds, carrots, applesauce cup, Cheez-it and choice of milk.

Wednesday’s “grab-n-go” breakfast will include cereal bars, raisins, juice and choice of milk.
