Trash, recycling pick-up delays possible for Tacoma residents due to COVID-19 impacts
Garbage bins in Tacoma might be sitting on the curb a bit longer than usual.
Trash pickup delays are possible for both residential and commercial customers due to impacts of COVID-19, the city said in a press release on Friday.
“This may result in some customers experiencing delays in recycling, yard waste and Call-2-Haul collection services,” according to the press release. “If delays occur, customers are asked to leave waste containers in their designated location for regular collection, and City staff will work to collect it within one week (including weekends) of the scheduled collection day.”
On Friday, there were four glass pick-up routes delayed, Environmental Services Department Director Mike Slevin said Tuesday. Those routes will be picked up Saturday instead.
An employee in the city’s Environmental Services Solid Waste Division tested presumed positive for coronavirus earlier this week.
The department is seeing more employees call in sick and high-risk employees taking time off, Slevin said.
“We’re asking our customers to be flexible … our goal is to pick up garbage on the correct day,” he said.
If pickup schedules change, the city would notify residents on the Recycle Coach app, and information would be posted at cityoftacoma.org/solidwaste.
Currently, the Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center at 3510 S Mullen St. is open under regular operating hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
