Pierce County libraries will be closed indefinitely starting Saturday due to the spread of the coronavirus, the library system announced Friday.

The 20 library branches across Pierce County also will stop charging fines on overdue books and materials.

“Safety to the thousands of people we serve is our top priority,” Pierce County Library executive director Georgia Lomax said in a press release.

Staff will meet next week to discuss how to best serve residents with limited resources. They might videotape story times and post online and allow people to pick up print books and other materials if reserved online.

All public meetings held at the library, services and Pierce County READS book programs have been canceled.

The library system has not set a reopening date, citing a constantly evolving situation.

“Library leaders will evaluate regularly and make decisions based on the current situation, recommendations from public health and government leaders, and the library system’s principles and commitment to communities,” the statement said.

Readers are encouraged to use e-books, audiobooks and online magazines. Online services also include tutors to help students with homework and resources to help learn new languages.
