Looking for something to do at home? Why not fill out the U.S. Census?

Pierce County’s auditor is asking residents to participate in the 2020 U.S. Census online or over the phone.

“If you’re stuck at home, teleworking or have hours reduced, this would be the perfect time to do this,” Auditor Julie Anderson said Monday.

The census launched Thursday and includes an online survey for the first time.

The census offers a snapshot of the population every 10 years. Legislative districts are determined by the census, and results determine how resources are allocated for new roads, schools and emergency services.

“If you want local resources, the community has to stand up and be counted,” Anderson said.

More than 5 million Americans already have filled out the survey, said Toby Nelson, a spokesperson for the U.S Census Bureau.

Residents are legally required to fill out the 10-question survey. Federal courts threw out the Trump administration’s controversial citizenship question. Still, there is concern that debate caused a chilling effect on undocumented people.

If surveys are not completed by mid-April, paper surveys will be sent to households.

Anderson said it would be more efficient — and safer for some — for people to respond to the survey online. If the household does not respond online or on paper, a census worker will try to make contact.

The bureau announced adjustments to make precautions in light of the coronavirus.

  • Last day is currently scheduled for July 31, but that date will pushed back if necessary

  • For those experiencing homelessness, plans originally included having Census staff ask those experiencing homelessness at shelters or soup kitchens. Now, the bureau asks shelters and nonprofits to provide the survey on paper.

  • Those in shared housing, like college dormitories, prisons, nursing homes, and military barracks, are asked to respond online or fill out paper forms to minimize in-person contact.

  • If needed, the bureau will delay or discontinue nonresponse follow-up visits in a particular area

The U.S. Census can be filled out at 2020Census.gov or completed by phone in several languages seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
