Nominations for 2020 Greater Tacoma Peace Prize due April 17
The deadline for nominations for the 2020 Greater Tacoma Peace Prize has been extended in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
Nominations for this year’s laureate are now due April 17.
The award recognizes, honors and encourages peace-building by members of the community and promoted peace locally, nationally and internationally.
The nominee must be an individual or organization with significant ties to the greater Tacoma area and must have had a positive impact. The GTPP Committee will look at the nominee’s “genuine commitment to peace, attention to diversity, hands-on involvement in peace work, longevity of service in peace work, and impact of peace work.”
Nominations can be made online at tacomapeaceprize.org.
The name of the recipient will be announced in April. The award will be presented at the 2020 GTPP Laureate Recognition Banquet in the fall.
The award started in 2005 and is modeled on the Nobel Peace Prize.
Past laureates include 2019 recipient Willie Stewart, education advocate and Tacoma’s first black principal, and 2018 recipient Melannie Denise Cunningham, director of multicultural outreach and engagement at Pacific Lutheran University.
“GTPP places a spotlight on the amazing peacemakers in our own back yard who donate their time and resources to the cause of peace,” said Janet Lee Ruud, GTPP president.
