Tacoma police make music video to encourage social distancing during coronavirus crisis

Tacoma police are hoping to sing people into social distancing submission.

The department on Tuesday released a two-minute music video as an educational reminder to keep six feet apart during Gov. Jay Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” emergency order.

Although data suggests Washington state is “flattening the curve” with COVID-19, police thought folks could use a light-hearted reminder.

“We have no desire to make arrests for violations of the governor’s order,” Police Chief Don Ramsdell said. “At the same time, we’re in a position to help educate our community. This can sometimes mean using a novel approach. Despite the upbeat feel of our video, we recognize the seriousness of this issue and the suffering at hand. Our aim is to reach people, help educate them and minimize further pain in our community.”

A department employee wrote the song titled “Step Off Six” with a country twang feel and catchy lyrics.

Six department personnel participated in the video — filmed on the waterfront — using jazz hands, tapping feet and clicking heels to get the message across.
