Popular Lakewood festival scheduled for July canceled amid coronavirus concerns
The annual summer festival in Lakewood that draws more than 50,000 people to Fort Steilacoom Park has been canceled, the city announced Friday.
Lakewood SummerFEST could not be held in a way that would comply with social distancing practices, the city said in a statement.
Dr. Anthony Chen of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department told the Board of Health on Wednesday it would be a while before large public gatherings will happen.
The family friendly outdoor festival for July 11 was expected to include the Wenatchee Youth Circus, local bands and activities like a fun run, bubble soccer, a beer garden and more than 100 market vendors.
“While we are sad that we won’t be able to celebrate the summer with our residents, we know that this was the right decision needed at this time to keep our community healthy,” the city said in a statement.
The city also canceled the semiweekly Lakewood Night Market and the Ray Evans Memorial Fishing event.
