Baby mountain goat born for the first time in 14 years at Northwest Trek

Northwest Trek has a new family member: a baby mountain goat.

At 5 days old, the baby goat, called a kid, is the first to be born at the Eatonville wildlife park in 14 years.

The kid was born Thursday morning and is being closely monitored by staff.

“Mother Bailey and her kid are bonding nicely, and the newborn appears to be healthy and nursing well,” Allison Case, head veterinarian at the park, said in a press release.

The parents of the kid were moved to the park in 2018 under a multi-agency project to relocate non-native mountain goats from Washington’s Olympic Mountains to the North Cascades, where their populations were depleted.

The goat is the latest in a “baby boom” at the wildlife park. There also are bison and elk calves and bighorn sheep lambs.

Those who plan to participate in Northwest Trek’s new Wild Drive can get the chance to spot the newborn goat.

Wild Drive opened to the public over the weekend and allows people to drive their own vehicles, caravan-style, through the park’s 435-acre free-roaming area. It’s the first time Northwest Trek has allowed people to drive their own vehicles through the park.

Gov. Jay Inslee’s office approved Wild Drive earlier this month as a safe way to enjoy the park amid the coronavirus pandemic.
