Major gas leak forces shutdown of downtown Puyallup

A major gas leak forced the shutdown of sections of downtown Puyallup early Tuesday.

About 2 a.m., a construction crew hit a gas line near West Pioneer Avenue and South Meridian.

Central Pierce firefighters quickly blocked off streets within 500 feet of the leak, asking residents to keep clear of the area.

Puget Sound Energy cut power to the area as a precaution, affecting roughly 1,250 customers.

“It is very important for citizens to stay out of the area in downtown Puyallup,” police tweeted, adding that the odor of gas remained.

Roads are closed to both pedestrians and vehicles.

Officials said the shutdown is expected to be lengthy, but they did not have an estimate of time.

Anyone with questions about the incident can call the Puyallup Emergency Management Department at 253-864-4170
