Tacoma Safe Streets to hold fundraising drive-in movie night on Aug. 29

The organization Safe Streets will hold a drive-in movie night fundraiser Aug. 29 at the LeMay - America’s Car Museum. The show will be “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”

Masks will be required when not in your vehicle; orders from food trucks will be done from an app; and the number of people in a restroom at a single time will be limited.

The 2019 film stars Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers, the longtime host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and advocate for accessible programming for youth. Tickets are $100 for a single vehicle or $500 for a VIP ticket which gets premium seating plus complimentary concessions. They can be purchased via the Safe Streets website.

Other showings at the Museum, from “Toy Story 4” to “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” are sold out.

Julia Mulliganiel, development associate at Safe Streets, is in charge of fundraising. Mulliganiel said the higher prices are necessary to meet budget needs.

“We usually have two fundraiser events in the year, a luncheon and a golf tournament, so we’re hoping for a lot of our folks who normally come out to those to maybe come to the drive-in,” Mulliganiel said. “But we’ve also set aside about 20 tickets that we’re going to give for free to folks, especially community members who do neighborhood projects. We’ve been looking into creating a promo code for reduced price tickets.”

The hope is to raise $20,000 from ticket sales and sponsorships, which will go to benefit Safe Street Campaign’s neighborhood organizing and youth programs. These programs include after-school activities, workshops, poetry sessions, glass workshops and discussions with business owners.

“We thought Mister Rogers is very representative of neighborhoods and being a good neighbor,” Mulliganiel said.

There will be competitions surrounding the event, including a Mr. Roger’s Sweater Contest. Interested parties must send a photo of themselves in a sweater to azumwalt@safest.org before Aug. 25.
