Man who died after hit-and-run crash near Gig Harbor has been identified

A 53-year-old man who died at an area hospital after a Friday night hit-and-run crash in Pierce County has been identified, according to the Washington State Patrol.

About 8:30 p.m. Friday, Gale V. Zimmerman of Gig Harbor was headed east on state Route 16 at Burnham Drive.

Troopers say Zimmerman was traveling at a “high rate” of speed when he came up behind an unidentified vehicle driving at a “low rate” of speed.

Zimmerman tried to change lanes, but the other vehicle changed lanes in front of him, too, according to the State Patrol. Zimmerman then tried to go back to his original lane, but the unidentified driver also changed lanes again.

Zimmerman’s vehicle, according to the State Patrol, then drove off the road to the left and crashed into a cable barrier. His vehicle came to a stop in the median.

Eastbound SR16 was partially blocked for nearly four hours, according to the State Patrol.
